NZ Money Guides

Choosing the right business credit card in New Zealand can save you hundreds of dollars a year, improve your cash flow and turn everyday expenses into flights, cashback or statement credits. But with offerings from ANZ, BNZ, Westpac, ASB and American Express all competing for attention, it can be hard to know where to start.

We reviewed every major business credit card on the New Zealand market in early 2026 and put them through a side-by-side comparison. Below you will find the full table, our top picks for different business needs, and a practical strategy for getting the most value.

Key takeaway: The AMEX Gold Business Card offers the highest earning potential in New Zealand right now (2x Membership Rewards points per dollar until August 2026), but the BNZ Advantage Visa Business is the strongest option for businesses that need Visa acceptance everywhere and prefer straight cashback.

Why your business needs a credit card

Interest-free cash flow. Most business cards offer 44 to 55 interest-free days. That means you can pay a supplier today and not owe the bank a cent for up to eight weeks — as long as you pay the full balance by the due date. For businesses bridging the gap between paying costs and receiving revenue, this is effectively free short-term finance.

Earn on every dollar. Whether it is fuel, office supplies, software subscriptions, vehicle maintenance or advertising, a rewards card turns routine spending into Airpoints Dollars, cashback or points that can be redeemed for travel and statement credits.

Separate your finances. A dedicated business card simplifies GST returns, tax claims and bookkeeping. Cards from AMEX and ASB can export transactions directly into MYOB, Xero and Excel.

Travel and purchase protection. Several cards include complimentary overseas travel insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty cover at no extra cost — benefits that would otherwise cost hundreds of dollars a year.

Best card for rewards — AMEX Gold Business

Best for rewards

American Express Gold Business Card

$145/year · Up to 50 days interest-free · 50,000 bonus points sign-up offer

  • Earns 2 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent (Turbo rate, valid until 31 August 2026)
  • $50,000 annual spend earns ~100,000 points — worth approximately $750 in travel credit or 667 Airpoints Dollars
  • 50,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 within 2 months of approval (new members only)
  • Complimentary overseas travel insurance, fraud protection guarantee and MYOB/Xero export
  • Points never expire while the account is active and in good standing
  • Minimum business revenue of $60,000 required to apply

The AMEX Gold Business is the standout for pure earning power. No bank-issued card comes close to its 2x points rate, which is a result of AMEX being exempt from the Visa/Mastercard interchange fee caps that have forced banks to cut their rewards over recent years.

The main trade-off is acceptance. AMEX is widely accepted at major NZ retailers (Countdown, New World, BP, Z Energy, Mitre 10, Bunnings, and most chains) and works with Apple Pay and Google Pay. However, some smaller independent retailers, cafes and tradespeople may not accept it.

Best card for cashback — BNZ Advantage Visa Business

Best for cashback

BNZ Advantage Visa Business Card

$100/year · Up to 50 days interest-free · Visa accepted everywhere

  • Earns 1.67 BNZ Points per $1 spent — converts to approximately $1 cashback for every $75 spent (1.33% return)
  • $50,000 annual spend earns approximately $667 in cashback credited to your account
  • Complimentary overseas travel insurance for up to 35 days per trip
  • Visa network means acceptance at virtually every NZ merchant — critical for small suppliers
  • Fee waiver may be available for eligible spend levels (worth asking BNZ about)
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay compatible

For businesses that deal with lots of small vendors — mechanics, parts suppliers, independent retailers — the BNZ Advantage Visa Business is the pick. You will never be caught out at a terminal that does not accept your card, and the cashback goes straight to your account rather than needing to be converted through a rewards portal.

One important note: BNZ devalued their personal Advantage credit card rewards by approximately 26% in February 2026. It is worth confirming directly with BNZ that the business card terms shown above remain current, as these may also be subject to change.

Best card for low interest — ANZ Visa Business Low Rate

If your business sometimes needs to carry a balance, the ANZ Visa Business Low Rate at 13.90% p.a. is the most affordable option. With a $35 annual fee — the lowest of any card in this comparison — it costs very little to hold. The trade-off is straightforward: no rewards, no travel insurance, no extras. It is a simple, cheap line of credit.

What $50,000 in annual spend earns you

To put the rewards in concrete terms, here is what each card returns on $50,000 of annual business spending:

Card Annual fee Reward value Net return (after fees)
AMEX Gold Business $145 ~$750 ~$605 highest
BNZ Advantage Visa Business $100 ~$667 ~$567
ANZ Visa Business Airpoints $145 ~$588 ~$443
Westpac Airpoints Business MC $100 ~$588 ~$488
ASB Visa Business Rewards $70 ~$500 ~$430
ANZ Visa Business CashBack $80 ~$500 ~$420

AMEX calculated at 2 pts per $1 (Turbo rate, valid until 31 August 2026) valued at $0.75 per 100 points via AMEX Travel. BNZ cashback based on ~$1 per $75 spent. Airpoints Dollars valued at approximately $1 NZD each.

Cash flow comparison

If improving cash flow is your primary goal, interest-free days and the purchase rate matter more than rewards. Here is how the cards stack up:

Card Interest-free days Purchase rate Cash flow verdict
BNZ Business First Lite Up to 55 most 14.95% Best interest-free buffer
AMEX Gold Business Up to 50 3.25%* Lowest cost if late
BNZ Advantage Visa Business Up to 50 18.95% Good window + rewards
ASB Visa Business Rewards Up to 50 18.95% Good window + rewards
ANZ Visa Business Low Rate Up to 44 13.90% lowest Best if carrying a balance
ANZ Visa Business Airpoints Up to 44 20.95% High rate if late
Westpac Airpoints Business MC Up to 44 20.95% High rate if late
Cash flow tip: Always pay the full balance by the due date. The interest-free period only applies when you clear the balance in full. Carrying even a small balance triggers interest on the entire amount — at rates up to 20.95% p.a. on some cards.

Pro strategy: the two-card approach

If your budget allows, running two cards gives you the best of both worlds: maximum rewards on most spending and universal acceptance for the rest.

Primary card

AMEX Gold Business

  • Use for all major accepted purchases
  • Fuel (BP, Z), supermarkets, subscriptions
  • Online purchases and supplier payments
  • Earn 2x points on every dollar
  • Accumulate for flights and travel credits
Backup card

ANZ Visa Business Low Rate

  • Use where AMEX is not accepted
  • Smaller retailers, cafes, markets
  • Cash flow buffer at just 13.90% p.a.
  • Only $35/year annual fee
  • Visa accepted virtually everywhere

Combined annual fees come to just $180 ($145 + $35). On $50,000 of spending — even if only 70% goes through the AMEX — you would still earn over $500 in net rewards after fees. The ANZ Low Rate card handles the rest with universal Visa acceptance and the cheapest interest rate if you ever need to carry a balance.

If you can only hold one card and you deal with lots of small vendors, the BNZ Advantage Visa Business is the strongest single-card option: solid cashback, Visa acceptance everywhere, travel insurance included, and 50 interest-free days for cash flow.

Important considerations

AMEX acceptance is improving

American Express is widely accepted at major NZ retailers, supermarkets, fuel stations and online. Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported. However, some smaller independent merchants still do not accept it — particularly trades, market vendors and rural businesses.

The AMEX Turbo rate expires August 2026

The 2x points earn rate on the AMEX Gold Business is the Turbo promotion, confirmed until 31 August 2026. After that it reverts to 1 point per $1 spent. Keep an eye on whether AMEX extends it or introduces a new promotion.

BNZ recently devalued personal card rewards

BNZ reduced the value of BNZ Points by approximately 26% for personal Advantage cardholders from 3 February 2026 and cut interest-free days from 55 to 44. The business card terms should be confirmed directly with BNZ to ensure they have not been similarly affected.

Always pay in full

The interest-free period only applies if you pay the full balance by the due date each month. Carrying a balance triggers interest on the entire amount — at rates up to 20.95% p.a. on some cards, which will quickly wipe out any rewards earned.

Review your card annually

Card benefits, fees and earn rates change frequently. Kiwibank ended its Airpoints programme entirely in October 2025, and BNZ cut rewards in February 2026. An annual review ensures you are not paying for a card that no longer delivers value.
